Why I keep coming back to Gili Air

I have visited Gili Air three times across different seasons, and each trip reinforced the same conclusion: this is the best small island in Southeast Asia for travelers who want beauty without sacrificing function.

Not the loudest island. Not the cheapest. Not the most remote. But the one that hits the sweet spot between snorkeling, food, atmosphere, and ease of travel better than anywhere else I have stayed in the region.

The Gili Islands sit off Lombok's northwest coast: three tiny siblings with no motorized traffic, white sand, and water so clear you can see turtles from the beach on a calm morning.

Most first-time visitors default to Gili Trawangan because it has the reputation. I did that on my first trip years ago. Since then I have skipped Gili T entirely and only returned to Gili Air.

Gili T, Gili Meno, and Gili Air: three islands, three personalities

Understanding the Gilis starts with accepting they are not interchangeable. Each island was built for a different type of traveler.

• Gili Trawangan (Gili T): The party island. Beach clubs, fire shows, hostel culture, late nights. Great if you are 22 and want to meet people fast. Less great if you want sleep before 2 a.m.
• Gili Meno: The quiet island. Couples and honeymooners love it. Almost nothing happens after sunset. Beautiful, but you will run out of things to do after two days unless you are here to do absolutely nothing.
• Gili Air: The balance island. Enough restaurants, enough social energy, enough snorkeling and diving, but you can still walk to the north shore and hear nothing but waves.

Gili Air is the closest to Lombok at roughly 2.4 square kilometers. You can walk the perimeter in about 90 minutes. Horse carts and bicycles replace cars and scooters.

What Gili Air does better than anywhere else

Snorkeling: I have seen sea turtles on almost every snorkel session from Gili Air. Turtle Point near Karisma Bistro is the main spot: swim out to the reefs along the right side of the island, go early before boat traffic picks up. On my best morning I counted eight turtles in under two hours.

Food: I did not expect a 2.4 square kilometer island to have this many repeat-worthy restaurants. Gili Coffee Roaster for carrot cake and coffee. Orange Warung for proper Indonesian home cooking. Mama Pizza for wood-fired pizza at sunset. Pituq for vegan food that converts non-vegans. Aura Bowls for peanut chicken noodles and crispy tempe.

Vibe: The crowd skews older and more interesting than Gili T. Couples, remote workers, divers, and slow travelers who have done the party circuit and moved on. You meet people at warungs, not just beach clubs.

Island geography: The east side is the busiest strip with most restaurants and boat traffic. The north is quiet. The west faces sunset. Pick your accommodation zone based on whether you want convenience or silence. The biggest mistake I see visitors make is booking the wrong side of the island for their travel style.

The honest cons (because it is not perfect)

Gili Air is not cheap anymore. Prices have climbed steadily since my first visit. Warung meals still run $3 to $5, but boutique hotels and sunset cocktails add up fast.

Party boats from Gili T sometimes pump bass across the water in the evening. If you book on the east side, you might hear it. Stay north or west if sound sensitivity matters.

July and August bring peak crowds. Dry season is April through October, but those two months feel different. Book accommodation early or visit shoulder season in May or September.

There are no cars, which is charming until you are hauling luggage from the pier in midday heat. Most hotels send someone with a horse cart. Tip them well.

Infrastructure is basic by design. WiFi works at cafes with Starlink, but do not expect Bali-level coworking. I treat Gili Air as a three-to-four night reset, not a month-long base.

Who should pick Gili Air (and who should not)

Pick Gili Air if you are: a couple wanting snorkeling and good food without hostel chaos. A slow traveler who has outgrown full-moon parties. A diver or snorkeler who wants shore access and turtle encounters. Someone combining Lombok and Bali who wants one island stop that does everything reasonably well.

Skip Gili Air if you are: chasing nightlife and new friends every night (go Gili T). Wanting total isolation (go Gili Meno). On a tight backpacker budget (Gili T hostels are cheaper). Expecting luxury resort infrastructure (look at south Lombok or north Bali instead).

My verdict after three visits: Gili Air wins for couples, slow travelers, and anyone over hostel party culture.

Plan at least three nights. Four is better. One night is just transit. Build your Gili route in ONVA, pin your snorkel spots and restaurant picks on a shared map, and split boat tickets and villa costs from day one.

Gili Air and the Lombok connection

Gili Air sits closest to Lombok's northwest coast. On clear days you stare straight at Mount Rinjani from the east shore. That geography matters for trip planning.

Many travelers do Bali, then fast boat to Gili Air, then continue to Kuta Lombok or the mainland. I have run this route twice. Gili Air works as the transition point: three or four nights of island reset before you pick up a scooter on Lombok.

Bangsal harbor on Lombok is 30 to 45 minutes by boat. Public ferries and speedboats run throughout the day. If you are building a longer Indonesia loop, Gili Air is the logical bridge between Bali culture and Lombok surf.

The view of Rinjani at sunset from Gili Air's east coast is one of those moments that justifies the whole fast boat hassle from Bali. Bring a light layer. Wind picks up after dark.

Practical tips from three visits

Getting there:Fast boats from Bali (Serangan, Padang Bai, or Amed) take 1.5 to 2 hours. From Lombok's Bangsal harbor, 30 to 45 minutes. I prefer morning departures for calmer seas.

Getting around: Walk or rent a bicycle. The island is flat and small. No scooters, no cars.

Best season: April to October dry season. May and September give you the best balance of weather and crowd levels.

Day trips: Snorkeling triangle tours hit all three islands in one morning. Gili Meno is an easy half-day for the turtle sanctuary. Save each stop to your map with notes on timing and cost.

What to pack: Reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries, a dry bag for electronics, and cash. ATMs exist on the east coast but fees are high. Bring enough rupiah for your full stay plus boat tickets back.

Health: Basic clinic on the island. Serious issues require boat to Lombok or Bali. Travel insurance is not optional for island trips. I keep my policy PDF in my document vault with offline access.
