Digital Nomad in Lombok: Is It Actually Worth It?
Honest Lombok nomad assessment: WiFi reality, costs, pros, cons, and who should base here.

Lombok is more than the Gili Islands
Most Lombok content stops at Gili Trawangan cocktails and Gili Air sunsets. Fair enough. The Gilis are great.
But mainland Lombok is where the island feels different from Bali: arid south coast bays, Sasak villages, volcano treks, north waterfalls, and surf breaks with room to breathe. I have done the Gili ferry loop and the south coast circuit. The south coast is the real Lombok in my opinion.
This guide covers things to do in Lombok beyond the Gilis, with difficulty, cost, time needed, and who each activity suits.

Kuta south coast beach circuit
Base in Kuta Lombok and scooter the south coast: Tanjung Aan, Mawun, Selong Belanak, Gerupuk, and Are Guling for the adventurous.
Allow a full day minimum. Two days if you surf and want unhurried lunches on the sand.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate (scooter confidence required).
- Cost: Scooter rental IDR 60,000 to 80,000 per day plus warung meals.
- Best for: Everyone. Surfers and non-surfers.
Pin each beach on a shared map before you ride. I use ONVA for offline navigation between unmarked turns.
Mount Rinjani trek
I have not summited Rinjani personally, but it dominates every serious Lombok itinerary for good reason. At 3,726 meters it is Indonesia's second highest volcano. The classic trek runs two to three days through crater rim camps with sunrise views that justify the suffering.
Book through reputable operators out of Senaru or Sembalun. Dry season (April to October) is essential. Fitness level should be solid.
- Difficulty: Hard. Steep climbs, altitude, basic camp conditions.
- Cost: IDR 2.5 to 4 million ($160 to $260) depending on package and group size.
- Time: Two to three days minimum.
- Best for: Fit hikers seeking a bucket-list volcano trek.
North Lombok waterfalls: Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep
Near Senaru at the Rinjani trailhead, Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls deliver lush jungle contrast that differs sharply from the arid south.
Tiu Kelep requires river walking and gets you closer to the fall. Sendang Gile is easier access. Combine with a Rinjani trek or a north loop day trip from Senggigi.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
- Cost: Small local fees plus guide tips.
- Time: Half day.
Senggigi: worth a stop or skip?
Senggigi was the original west coast tourist strip. The 2018 earthquake damage slowed recovery in places. Today it is a sunset strip with mid-range resorts and ferry access toward the Gilis.
Honest take: stop if you are looping north to south. Do not fly across the world for Senggigi alone. The south coast and Rinjani outperform it for most travelers.
- Difficulty: Easy.
- Best for: Transit nights, sunset dinners, Gili ferry connections.
Traditional Sasak villages
North of Kuta, Sasak villages preserve weaving traditions and housing styles distinct from Balinese Hindu culture. Sade and Rambitan are the most visited.
Go with respectful expectations. These are living communities, not theme parks. Hire a local guide or visit through ethical tour operators who pay villagers fairly.
- Difficulty: Easy.
- Cost: Donation or guide fee IDR 50,000 to 150,000.
- Best for: Culture travelers tired of Bali temple queues.
Desert Point: expert surf pilgrimage
Desert Point on the southwest coast is legendary among advanced surfers. Long left-hand barrels, remote location, multi-hour drives, boat access depending on conditions.
I have not surfed it. Include it here because every surf-focused Lombok list mentions it and beginners should know it is not their spot.
- Difficulty: Expert surf and logistics.
- Best for: Advanced surfers with time and tolerance for remote access.
Eat distinctly Lombok
Balinese food gets the global spotlight. Lombok has its own lane.
- Ayam taliwang: Spicy grilled chicken, often the best thing on the menu.
- Plecing kangkung: Water spinach with fiery sambal.
- Fresh seafood: South coast warungs near Selong Belanak.
Save warung pins with dish notes. Future you will forget which place served the best taliwang after three weeks in Indonesia.
Bangsal ferry to the Gili Islands
The cheap local boat from Bangsal to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, or Gili Meno is the classic Lombok finish. Public ferries cost a fraction of organized speedboat packages from Bali.
Chaos at the harbor is real. Touts will lie about schedules. Walk to the official ticket booth. Confirm which island your boat serves before boarding. The crossing is short but crowded during peak season.
Combine mainland Lombok with Gilis on the same trip to see both the raw south coast and the car-free island atmosphere without doubling flights.
What to pack for mainland Lombok
Reef booties if you surf. Sun protection for arid coast (the bukit reflects heat). Modest clothing for village visits and mosques. Rain layer for Rinjani or north waterfalls even in dry season.
Cash in IDR because ATMs empty on weekends. Power bank for long scooter days. Offline maps because signal drops between south coast bays.
Download everything into one travel app before leaving Kuta town. Scattered PDFs in email are painful at Bangsal with spotty data.
Sample seven-day Lombok itinerary (mainland focus)
- Day 1 to 3: Kuta Lombok base, south coast beaches, surf or swim.
- Day 4: Sasak village half day, sunset Tanjung Aan.
- Day 5 to 6: Rinjani trek OR north waterfalls from Senaru.
- Day 7: Bangsal ferry to Gili Air if you want the island finish.
Build this in ONVA with ferry PDFs, trek operator confirmations, and scooter rental costs logged from day one. Multi-activity Lombok trips generate scattered bookings that are painful to reconstruct from email later.
Mount Rinjani planning notes
Even non-hikers should understand Rinjani. The volcano dominates north Lombok and pulls travelers away from the south coast for two to three days.
Trek packages include guides and camp gear. Pack warm layers for summit night. Book operators with recent safety reviews.
Split groups easily: hikers to Senaru, beach people stay in Kuta.
South coast vs north Lombok: pick your chapter
South Lombok (Kuta, beaches, surf) suits short trips and first visits. North Lombok (Rinjani, Senaru waterfalls, quieter villages) suits hikers and travelers with extra days.
Connecting both requires driving time across the island. Budget one travel day or an internal flight if schedules align. Many travelers choose one region per trip and return for the other.
I prioritize south coast on first visits because airport proximity and beach density deliver immediate payoff. Rinjani becomes trip two once you know you will return.
Local operators for Rinjani and safaris prefer cash deposits. ATMs in Kuta run dry on weekends. Withdraw in Mataram or at LOP airport when you land if a trek sits mid-itinerary.
Local transport beyond scooters
Private drivers cost IDR 500,000 to 800,000 for full-day south coast tours if you prefer not to scooter. Shared vans run between major towns but schedules are loose.
Bangsal harbor transfers from Kuta require taxi or driver unless you scooter with luggage strapped creatively. Plan harbor day separately from beach-hopping days to reduce stress.
Grab availability is limited compared to Bali. Negotiate tuk-tuk prices before short hops or use guesthouse recommended drivers for reliability.
Mandalika event weekends spike transport demand. Book drivers early if your itinerary crosses MotoGP or concert dates on the south coast circuit.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Gili Islands enough for a Lombok trip?
For a beach holiday, maybe. For understanding Lombok, no. Mainland south coast and Rinjani show a different island than the Gili party strip.
How many days do you need on mainland Lombok?
Five to seven days minimum for south coast plus one major activity (Rinjani or north waterfalls).
Add Gilis separately if desired. Ten days mainland lets you surf, trek, and village-hop without constant packing.
Do I need to be fit for Mount Rinjani?
Yes. Steep trails, altitude, and basic camping. Train with hills before you book.
How do I get from mainland Lombok to the Gilis?
Public boats from Bangsal harbor. Cheap, chaotic, functional. Arrive early. Store ticket photos offline.
What is the best way to plan a Lombok trip?
One shared map for beaches, villages, and waterfalls. One expense log for scooters, treks, and ferries. One document vault for operator confirmations. ONVA handles all three. Free on iOS and Android.
Is Lombok good for solo travelers?
Yes, especially Kuta south coast for surf and scooter beach hopping.
Solo does not mean isolated. Guesthouses and surf breaks are social without the forced nightlife of Bali party zones.
Is Lombok good for families?
Selong Belanak and Mawun suit families with calm water. Scooter travel with kids requires caution on bukit roads.
Consider private driver days instead of scooter if traveling with young children.
When should I book Mount Rinjani?
Book dry season treks at least two to four weeks ahead for reputable operators. Peak months fill fast.
Confirm gear inclusion and porter fees before deposit. Packages vary widely in what they actually provide at camp.
