Real numbers from lived experience
I have spent years working remotely from Bali, with extended stays in Ubud, Uluwatu, and surrounding islands. I am heading to Chiang Mai on my 2026 route and have tracked Lisbon as the European baseline every nomad compares against.
This is not a Numbeo screenshot roundup. These are monthly budgets across three tiers: survival mode, comfortable nomad life, and generous living. Same categories, three cities, honest tradeoffs.

How I structure monthly budgets
Every city gets the same six categories: accommodation, food, coworking, transport, lifestyle, and hidden costs (visa runs, insurance, flights amortized).
Survival means you work most days, cook or eat local, skip nightlife, and rent a basic room.
Comfortable is the sweet spot most nomads actually want: private room or small villa, mix of local and mid-range food, occasional coworking, scooter or transit, weekend activities.
Generous is living well without luxury hotel pricing: nicer accommodation, frequent dining out, gym membership, travel weekends.
Bali monthly costs (2026)
| Category | Survival | Comfortable | Generous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | $300-450 | $450-700 | $700-1,200 |
| Food | $150-250 | $250-400 | $400-600 |
| Coworking | $0 | $0-150 | $150-250 |
| Transport | $40-60 | $50-80 | $80-120 |
| Lifestyle | $50 | $150-300 | $300-500 |
| Total | $900-1,100 | $1,200-1,800 | $1,800-2,500+ |
My personal Ubud guesthouse runs were $400 to $600 monthly. Warung meals cost $3 to $5. Scooter rental about $50 per month. Coworking ranged from free cafe days to $150 monthly at spaces like Titi Batu Club in Ubud.
Bali peak season (July-August, December) pushes accommodation 20 to 40 percent higher. Budget for that if your dates are fixed.
Chiang Mai monthly costs (2026)
| Category | Survival | Comfortable | Generous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | $200-350 | $350-500 | $500-800 |
| Food | $100-180 | $180-300 | $300-450 |
| Coworking | $0 | $0-100 | $100-200 |
| Transport | $20-40 | $40-60 | $60-100 |
| Lifestyle | $50 | $100-200 | $200-400 |
| Total | $700-900 | $800-1,200 | $1,200-1,600 |
Chiang Mai is the cheapest of the three for equivalent nomad quality. Nimman area costs more than Old City or Santitham. Street food is exceptional and absurdly cheap. CAMP at Maya Mall remains legendary for free coworking with a coffee purchase.
Hidden cost: burning season (March-April) may force you to leave or buy air purifiers. Factor that into annual planning.
Lisbon monthly costs (2026)
| Category | Survival | Comfortable | Generous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | $600-900 | $900-1,300 | $1,300-2,000 |
| Food | $250-350 | $350-500 | $500-800 |
| Coworking | $0-100 | $100-200 | $200-300 |
| Transport | $40-60 | $60-100 | $100-150 |
| Lifestyle | $100 | $200-400 | $400-700 |
| Total | $1,400-1,800 | $1,800-2,500 | $2,500-3,500+ |
Lisbon costs roughly double Chiang Mai for comparable lifestyle. You get EU infrastructure, Schengen access, D7 and digital nomad visa pathways, and timezone alignment with UK and Western Europe clients.
Rent inflation hit Lisbon hard post-2020. Long-stay negotiation still helps. Facebook groups and local contracts beat Airbnb monthly rates.
Hidden costs nobody budgets
- Visa runs and extensions: Bali VOA extensions, Thailand visa trips, Portugal visa application fees.
- Health insurance: $40 to $80 monthly for nomad policies like SafetyWing.
- Flights amortized: Divide annual flights across months you actually base somewhere.
- Slow season moves: Leaving Bali in wet season or Chiang Mai during burning season costs money.
Add $100 to $200 monthly to any city total for realistic all-in nomad accounting.
My actual Bali spending
In Ubud I paid $450 monthly for a guesthouse with desk and tested WiFi. Scooter rental $50. Warung meals $3 to $5. Coworking $0 to $150 depending on whether I used cafes or coworking spaces.
In Uluwatu costs ran slightly higher for accommodation but gym and surf replaced some entertainment spending. My comfortable Bali months averaged $1,400 to $1,700 all-in including weekend trips.
Value ranking for different nomad profiles
Budget maximizers: Chiang Mai wins clearly.
Lifestyle seekers: Bali outside peak offers surf, culture, food, and community no budget city matches.
EU remote workers: Lisbon justifies higher costs with timezone alignment and Schengen access.
US East Coast clients: Mexico City or Medellín beat both Asia options for call scheduling.
Sample monthly budget: comfortable Bali nomad
Accommodation $550. Food $300. Scooter $50. Coworking $100. Gym day passes $40. SIM data $10. Weekend trips $150. Insurance $60. Miscellaneous $140. Total roughly $1,400.
Same lifestyle in Chiang Mai drops accommodation to $400 and food to $200, landing near $1,000 comfortable tier. Lisbon equivalent runs $2,200 with similar activity level.
These are my actual ranges from 2022 to 2026, not theoretical backpacker budgets or luxury villa scenarios.
Currency fluctuations matter. Euro and pound nomads felt Bali get pricier in 2024 and 2025 as the rupiah shifted. Track spending in your home currency inside one app rather than mental math at warung tables.
Peak season villa rents in Canggu can blow comfortable tier into generous tier overnight. Negotiate monthly rates and avoid December and July if budget is the primary filter.
Lisbon rent inflation post-2020 changed the European nomad math. D7 visa pathways still attract long-stay Europeans but budget nomads increasingly compare Lisbon against Tbilisi and Budapest rather than Chiang Mai.
The verdict by priority
Cheapest: Chiang Mai at comfortable tier.
Best lifestyle value: Bali outside peak season. Surf, culture, food, community, and weather in one island.
Best for EU clients and legal clarity: Lisbon. Higher cost, better timezone and visa structure for Europeans.
I track actual spending per city in ONVA with multi-currency expense logging. When you move every two months, knowing your real burn rate per base prevents the “I thought Bali was cheap” surprise in December.
Final thoughts on the comparison
Cost of living comparisons only matter relative to your income and client geography. A Chiang Mai month at $1,000 means nothing if your clients demand EU afternoon calls and you sleep through them from Thailand.
I choose Bali when lifestyle and community justify the premium over Chiang Mai. I choose Lisbon when I need EU legal clarity and timezone alignment for German clients. I track every base in ONVA so six months later I can compare real spending, not estimated blog numbers.
Run your own month-long trial in each candidate city before committing to annual nomad plans. Two weeks tells you WiFi truth. Four weeks tells you cost truth. Eight weeks tells you whether you would return.
Track real spending, not blog estimates
Comparison tables age fast when rent spikes in Canggu or visa rules change in Portugal. I log every base city in ONVA with monthly totals for rent, food, transport, and coworking so my next move uses my own data, not a 2024 Reddit thread.
Run a four-week trial in any city before you call it your nomad home. Two weeks shows WiFi truth. Four weeks shows whether your actual lifestyle matches the spreadsheet.
