Sri Lankan rice and curry spread at a restaurant in Ella

We ate a lot of curry in Ella. This list survived.

Ella is a mountain town first and a food destination second. That does not mean you eat badly. It means the best meals hide in unpretentious spots while rooftop tourist traps sell views with mediocre plates.

I spent multiple nights in Ella across my Sri Lanka trip. These are personal picks with specific dishes, not a generic top-ten scraped from Google. Budget local meals run $3 to $6. You can eat very well under €10 per day total if you lean local.

Planning more of this trip? See our Ella travel guide for the next layer of detail.

Sleek Spoon: best chicken curry in Sri Lanka

Sleek Spoon is unpretentious, generous with portions, and served the best chicken curry of my entire Sri Lanka trip. Not close. Not debatable.

The spice level hits without overwhelming. Rice comes in the quantity you actually want after a morning hike. No Instagram lighting, no performance. Just excellent home-style cooking.

Order the chicken curry. Trust the rest of the menu second.

Matey Hut: the Egg Garlic Cheese Rotti legend

Matey Hut is easy to miss. That is part of why it feels like a find. The Egg Garlic Cheese Rotti has local cult status for good reason: crispy edges, melted cheese, garlic punch, filling enough after Ella Rock.

I came back twice. Once post-hike, once when rain killed outdoor plans and comfort food won.

Pin this one on your map with a note on the dish name. You will not remember “that rotti place past the bend” three days later.

Wimala: Cheese and Chicken Kottu

Kottu roti is Sri Lanka's comfort food at its best: chopped roti stir-fried on a flat griddle with vegetables, egg, and meat. Wimala does Cheese and Chicken Kottu that tastes like what locals order, not the watered-down tourist version.

The sound of metal spatulas on the griddle is part of the experience. Find a place with a crowd of locals. Wimala consistently had one.

Rainbow Cafe: afternoon cake stop

Rainbow Cafe is the cozy afternoon counterpoint to curry-heavy lunches. Cake of the day rotates. Coffee is decent. Atmosphere works for journal time or slow wifi sessions between hikes.

Not a dinner destination. Perfect 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. slot when you want sugar and shade.

The rice and curry situation in Ella

Every budget guesthouse offers rice and curry set lunch. Quality varies wildly. Good signs: multiple curries in small bowls, fresh sambol, refills offered, locals eating there.

Bad signs: single sad curry, pre-plated hours ahead, only tourists seated. Ask guesthouse staff where they eat on days off. That question beats any blog list.

Street rotti near Ella station

Walk the streets near Ella railway station in early evening. Vendors serve rotti, dhal, and short eats to workers and travelers. Prices stay low. Flavors stay honest.

Follow the crowd. If a cart has a line of Sri Lankans, queue. If only confused tourists hover, keep walking.

Breakfast: roti, dhal, and hoppers

Sri Lankan breakfast beats tourist buffet eggs. Look for:

  • String hoppers: Steamed rice noodle nests with curry and sambol.
  • Egg hoppers: Bowl-shaped crispy crepe with egg cooked in the center.
  • Roti and dhal: Simple, filling, cheap before hikes.

Guesthouse breakfast is convenient but often overpriced versus street options five minutes away.

Rooftop restaurants: view vs food

Ella has rooftop spots promising epic valley views. Some deliver both view and food. Many deliver view and average pasta.

My rule: rooftop for one sunset drink, local spot for dinner. Check recent reviews mentioning food quality, not just photos. A bad $18 plate tastes worse when the table next to you paid $4 for better curry downtown.

Daily food budget in Ella

  • Budget traveler: $8 to $12 per day (local lunch, street dinner, guesthouse breakfast skip).
  • Mid-range: $15 to $25 (cafe lunch, named restaurants dinner, one coffee stop).
  • Splurge night: $30+ if you add rooftop and western wine.

Log food expenses daily in one currency. LKR, USD, and EUR mental math at dinner breaks down by day three.

How to order like a local in Ella

Rice and curry is usually a set plate: white rice plus three to five curries and papadum. Point at what looks good or say “rice and curry” and trust the kitchen.

Kottu is made to order. Choose protein (chicken, egg, cheese) and spice level. Cheese kottu is richer than it sounds and perfect after long hikes.

Rotti comes stuffed or plain. Matey Hut's Egg Garlic Cheese version is the one I still think about months later.

Drinks: tea country expectations

You are in Sri Lankan tea country. Order plain tea at local spots for pennies. Cafes serve lattes at tourist prices that still undercut western cities.

Fresh lime soda and king coconut (thambili) beat bottled water for hydration after hikes. Avoid tap water. Check sealed bottles.

Alcohol is available at tourist restaurants but less central to Ella culture than beach towns. One sunset beer at a rooftop is enough. Curry houses do not need pairing advice.

Save every spot to your travel map

I pin each restaurant in ONVA with dish notes and price memory. Shared maps mean your travel partner sees the same list without forwarding screenshots.

Ella is small but easy to forget which alley had the rotti. One map beats six saved Instagram posts.

Dietary notes for Ella eaters

Sri Lankan curries often use dried fish (Maldive fish) in sambol even when vegetables dominate the plate. Ask if you avoid fish strictly.

Peanut appears in some curries and snacks. Dairy shows up in cheese kottu and rotti. Egg is everywhere in breakfast roti.

Western cafes handle allergies more explicitly than local warungs. When in doubt, eat at Sleek Spoon or Rainbow Cafe where staff speak enough English to clarify ingredients.

When to eat what in Ella

Heavy curry lunch after morning hikes. Rotti or kottu dinner. Cake and tea mid-afternoon when rain hits. Street rotti near the station after 6 p.m. when day-trippers leave and locals reclaim the strip.

Do not sleep on guesthouse breakfast if it is included and early enough for trail days. Paying cafe prices for eggs you could eat at 7 a.m. for free is silly math.

Time your food map pins with hike schedule in ONVA so Matey Hut follows Ella Rock automatically in your mental plan.

Sri Lankan hospitality runs warm in Ella. Learn three Sinhala words (hello, thank you, delicious) and watch portion sizes grow at local spots. Food here rewards curiosity over caution.

Share your own finds back to travel partners through a shared map so the list grows during the trip instead of staying static from one blog post.

Coffee and tea stops between meals

Ella sits in tea country. Factory tours aside, small shops sell loose leaf cheaper than airport gift boxes. Buy after you taste what you like at Rainbow Cafe or guesthouse breakfast.

Ceylon tea at source beats anything in Colombo souvenir shops. Pack ziplock bags inside dry daypacks if you hike before shopping.

Coffee culture grows yearly. Expect pour-over prices at tourist cafes and instant Nescafe at budget guesthouses. Plan accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best restaurant in Ella Sri Lanka?

Sleek Spoon for chicken curry. Matey Hut for Egg Garlic Cheese Rotti. Wimala for kottu. Depends what you crave.

Eat all three if you have three nights. Ella is small enough to cover the full list without restaurant fatigue.

Where are cheap eats in Ella?

Guesthouse rice and curry lunches, street vendors near the station, and local kottu spots like Wimala.

Budget $3 to $6 per meal.

Is Ella good for vegetarian food?

Yes. Sri Lankan rice and curry typically includes multiple vegetable curries. Specify no fish or meat stock if strict vegetarian.

How spicy is Ella food?

Spicier than western default, milder than some southern Sri Lanka coastal spots. Sambol brings heat. Ask for less spice if sensitive.

How do I remember all these food spots?

Pin each restaurant on a shared travel map with dish notes. ONVA keeps food pins, hike pins, and train tickets in one journey. Free on iOS and Android.

Is there western food in Ella?

Yes at tourist cafes and rooftops. Quality varies. I eat local six nights of seven and save western meals for rainy day comfort.

Sleek Spoon and Rainbow Cafe cover the middle ground between warung authenticity and tourist menu safety.

Where is the best breakfast in Ella?

Guesthouse included breakfast if early enough for hikes. Otherwise street rotti near the station or hoppers at local cafes.

Tourist cafes serve western breakfast at premium prices. Skip unless you need familiar calories before a long trail day.

Where should I eat dinner in Ella?

Sleek Spoon or Wimala for curry and kottu after hikes. Rooftop only if views matter more than food quality that night.

Eat early by 7 p.m. Kitchens close faster than beach towns in Sri Lanka.
